Presenting in Showroom: Ali Lamu
Ali Lamu: The love story that inspired a weekend bag and revived an island community
In 2008, a fisherman named Ali Lamu knocked on traveling photographer and artist, Daniela Bateleur's door. Little did they know this encounter would lead to love between the two of them and prosperity for Lamu, their island community off the coast of Kenya.
Ali came to Daniela because he was struggling to make ends meet and needed work. She didn't have a lot for him to do, but she did need one thing—an old Indian dhow sail. Ali found her a sail and after he brought it back, the two painted it together. One painted dhow sail turned into several handcrafted weekend bags sharing messages of hope and love. The bags have messages like 'Follow your star" and "Love" inscribed on them and Daniela says her inspiration for the design comes from: "The fishermen she works with, the first birds singing in the morning, the sun rising, the smell of the rain and the light, the free spirit of the fishermen and their close connection to nature and life, and their deep and pure faith and respect for life." The sale of the bags and artwork goes to the fishermen who made them and back into the community.

Presenting in Showroom: Karen by Simonsen
Karen by Simonsen clothing is a new Danish brand that offers a feminine look which is really easy to wear. The Karen by Simonsen collection is timeless and will be in your wardrobe for years to come. The collection is made up of dresses, tops, blazers and tunics which look great worn layered.
As a designer, Karen Simonsen is graphic and geometric-based thinking in lines. Intensely appearing in the design scope each time a new collection takes shape.
The world of math is strangely uneven but at the same time, true in a skewed balance very useful in the design process. Karen combines the two opposites and an explosion takes place. It generates the dynamics of energy. And the momentum is the nerve that creates the life of each individual collection. The rhythm based on, creation, erosion, cleansing, restoration and ultimately balance. Explosure can be powerful and expressive but also cool and discrete, but you know when its there – you feel it!

Presenting in showroom: Paul Frank
From the high tide to high society, Shane Baum of Baumvision and Leisure Society clearly knows how to see the world through some pretty fantastic eyewear. Born in small-town Iowa to an artistic choreographer mother and a jet-setting salesman father, Baum had his sights on the good life before he even realized what it was. When the time came, he left Iowa to attend San Jose State and majored in engineering. Upon completing school, he went onto Southern California to pursue one of his favorite pastimes, surfing. Unbeknownst to him, this is where his eyewear company Baumvision would ultimately be born. While on Laguna Beach, he met Mossimo Gianulli, founder of the Mossimo brand, and secured a position in the company’s warehouse. Within five years, at age 26, Baum had gone from warehouse laborer to the vice president of the brand’s then $3 million eyewear division.
After his successful transition into the world of eyewear, Baum established Baumvision and began producing for some heavy hitters in the industry, starting with Paul Frank. Others included MOSCOT, Modern Amusement and Marc Jacobs for both his own collection and Louis Vuitton. According to Baum: “at the end of the day, design is just an opinion and everyone has one. To be a true designer you have to be able to articulate your opinion through a medium, be it a pencil, lump of charcoal or a computer screen. The key is to be honest with yourself and make the appropriate decisions."
